The "Cool Roofs" Act: Mandatory Green Roofs on all Municipal Buildings

Citizen Initiative

Help

An initiative is a proposal that can be promoted by anyone on their own initiative (independently of other channels or participation spaces) through the collection of (digital) signatures for the organization to carry out a specific action (modify a regulation, initiate a project, change the name of a department or a street, etc.).

The promoters of an initiative can define its objectives, gather support, debate, disseminate it and define meeting points where signatures can be collected from the attendees or debates open to other participants.

Examples: An initiative can collect signatures to convene a consultation among all the people of an organization, or to create or convene an assembly, or to initiate a process of budget increase for a territory or area of the organization. During the process of collecting signatures, more people can add to this demand and carry it forward in the organization.

The "Cool Roofs" Act: Mandatory Green Roofs on all Municipal Buildings

The Problem: Athens faces increasingly severe heatwaves every summer. While we are building small parks on the ground, we are ignoring the thousands of square meters of gray concrete on top of our public buildings (schools, town halls, and services). These surfaces absorb heat all day and radiate it at night, keeping our neighborhoods hot. Our Demand: We, the undersigned citizens, demand that the City Council passes a new regulation requiring: Retrofitting: All existing municipal buildings must install "Cool Roof" materials or Green Roof gardens by 2030. New Construction: No new public building can be approved without a "Green Roof" study included in the design. Education: School rooftops should be turned into educational gardens where students learn about urban agriculture. This is not just about aesthetics; it is about lowering energy bills for air conditioning and cooling our city naturally. Hashtag: #CoolRoofsAthens
